We are a local community group tackling single-use plastic in Farnham, Surrey to improve the way we care for our planet. Through the support of businesses and organisations in the area we aim to minimise our town’s contribution to the plastic crisis. We encourage and support our champions and allies to swap, reduce and remove their single-use plastic items!
Plastic Free Farnham is run by a group of volunteers and was set up as part of ‘Plastic Free Communities’ a Surfers Against Sewage UK wide initiative to tackle single-use plastic pollution. We work in collaboration with the Farnham Rotary Clubs (Farnham and Weyside) and Farnham Town Council to create improvements to the area and grow a network of people that can support us.
Plastic is an incredibly useful, versatile and cheap material used in every aspect of life. However, its' properties make it ideal for light-weight, single-use items, which are used once and then thrown away. This throw away culture of single-use plastic causes a huge amount of plastic waste and plastic pollution is now a huge issue which affects all parts of our environment - from our streets and parks, to our rivers and forests.
Plastic pollution is something we can all take action to improve.
Globally, we produce almost 400 million tonnes of plastic every year. Over half of that is discarded, having adverse implications for our oceans, green spaces, wildlife, economy and even our health.
Our atmosphere is also affected by plastic: 99% of plastic is derived from fossil fuels and carbon emissions from plastic production are set to more than triple by 2050.
The oceans and our green spaces sustain us, our wellbeing and our planet. As a environmentally conscious group, we want to create thriving oceans, environments and people for years to come. This is why plastic pollution, and specifically tackling society’s throwaway culture, is a top priority for us. It isn’t just about cleaning up our existing environment, it’s about protecting future generations.
